Going downhill feels like going uphill.

November 24, 2010

Good news! I hit 40,000 words for my Nanowrimo novel yesterday! It’s downhill all the way to the magic 50K.

Bad news! Today every word feels like it’s being pulled out of my soul.

This morning I gritted my teeth, (metaphorically) chained my butt to the chair and forced out a few words. It was rubbish. I stopped. Looked at my word count. 300 words.

I (metaphorically) banged my head on the keyboard, did some chores then came back to the computer. Which (metaphorically) laughed at me.

So I tried again.

Ah, yes…I need to find out what happens with *this* character. And what about *her*? Isn’t it about time she met up with the others and started planning the great action sequence that needs to come at the end of the story? Better start putting down some groundwork for that….

and the words came.

It’s still been a hard slog but I’ve got my writing rhythm back. Frequent breaks and working on different scenes: that’s the ticket.

I suppose today’s lesson is even when you think you’re on the downhill slide to Nano victory it can still be an uphill struggle.

Just keep going!
